A handle assembly for a medical instrument, such as an otoscope, and the full assembly of the medical instrument. The handle assembly has a primary housing with a first end and an opposite open second end. The primary housing defines a central cavity. A standardized connector is formed at the first end. A detachable housing extension is attached to the opposite end. The housing extension defines an internal compartment that is accessible when detached.
