Abstract
A system comprises hierarchically organized microcells arranged in zones, tiles, and panels for energy regulation applications. Each microcell includes a substrate with surface features, an opposing membrane defining a maintained nanoscale gap, activation electrodes, and gap-control elements. Zone controllers coordinate subsets of microcells. Tile controllers manage multiple zones with local electronics. Panel controllers regulate system operation through coordinated control. Fault detection isolates malfunctioning elements while maintaining system operation.…
