Across jurisdictions

Patent PDF coverageby country, office and number format.

Check patent PDF coverage across seven publication systems: US, CN, JP, KR, EP, WO and TW. Available files depend on the publication and source. Sources include official patent databases such as USPTO, EPO and TIPO GPSS.

Supported jurisdictions

  • United States
  • China
  • Taiwan
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Europe
  • WIPO (WO)

Document availability varies by publication and source.

Number formats, kind codes and source limits

United States · USPTO

US · OA supported · US documents are included.

Accepted number examples: US 2024/0039765 A1

Kind code or local number type: A1 identifies a published application; B2 commonly identifies a granted US patent. Keep the code shown in the reference.

PDF retrieval: US publication PDFs can be attempted through supported sources; a matching record does not ensure every source returns a file. Cross-border focus does not mean non-US only.

China · CNIPA

CN · OA supported · Invention and design examples.

Accepted number examples: CN 104704658 A · CN 308690548 S · CN 202330520742.7

Kind code or local number type: A marks the invention example and S the design publication example. Preserve the CN prefix and the publication code.

PDF retrieval: Supported CN publications are retrieved from available sources; some application-number patterns do not resolve to a publication. Keep the CN prefix. The application example is a design application; not every application-number format is supported.

Taiwan · TIPO

TW · OA supported · Invention, design and application examples.

Accepted number examples: TW I606827 · TW D237262 · TW 112306341

Kind code or local number type: I and D are local Taiwan number identifiers in these examples; they are not universal kind codes.

PDF retrieval: Supported TW numbers are retrieved from available sources; availability varies by document. Keep TW before the number so the jurisdiction is unambiguous.

Japan · JPO

JP · OA supported · Japanese publication notation.

Accepted number examples: 特開2017-165727 · JP 2017165727 A

Kind code or local number type: A appears on the JP publication example. The accepted 特開 form is a local publication notation.

PDF retrieval: Supported JP publications are attempted; a valid number may still resolve to a record without a downloadable PDF. Supported 特開 references can be entered without rewriting them as JP.

Korea · Korean IP office

KR · OA supported · Supported publication-number label.

Accepted number examples: 공개번호 10-2017-0012345

Kind code or local number type: The example uses the 공개번호 publication label. Not every registration or design-number notation is supported.

PDF retrieval: Retrieval is limited to recognized KR publication formats and the files exposed by the source. Not all Korean registration or design labels are supported.

Europe · EPO

EP · OA supported · European patent publications.

Accepted number examples: EP 1234567 A1

Kind code or local number type: A1 is the publication kind in this example. An EP patent publication is not an EUIPO design record.

PDF retrieval: Supported EP publication PDFs are attempted from available sources; record coverage and file availability can differ. EPO patent coverage does not imply EUIPO registered-design coverage.

WIPO (WO) · WIPO PatentScope

WO · patent · International patent publications.

Accepted number examples: WO 2019/029387 A1

Kind code or local number type: A1 is shown in this example; if the A1 document is unavailable, the A2 version is also checked.

PDF retrieval: WO publication PDFs can be downloaded when a source provides the specific document. WO Office Actions cannot be uploaded. PDF availability depends on the publication and source.

Start with a published number and its office code.

Patent PDF lookup usually starts with a publication number, not an application number. Keep the office prefix and publication kind code shown on the source: US 2024/0039765 A1, CN 104704658 A, JP 2017165727 A, EP 1234567 A1, WO 2019/029387 A1 or TW I606827. These examples show recognized input formats; this page does not query live registers or confirm that a PDF is available.

For manual checking, open the relevant office portal and compare the publication number, title, date and kind code.

For punctuation and publication-kind examples, see the patent number and kind-code guide before changing an office prefix or selecting a family member.

Seven publication systems use different number conventions.

US publications commonly use A1 for a published application and B2 for a granted patent. The China examples use A for an invention and S for a design publication. Japan accepts local 特開 notation as well as a JP-form number; EP and WO examples retain A1. Taiwan uses local identifiers such as I for invention and D for design. These labels help distinguish document types, but they are not interchangeable across offices.

The cards link to official search portals for USPTO, CNIPA, J-PlatPat, KIPRIS, Espacenet, WIPO PATENTSCOPE and TIPO. An accepted number can still refer to an unpublished application or a publication whose PDF is not exposed by a retrieval source.

Coverage is a retrieval attempt, not a legal-status check.

DownloadPatent attempts to retrieve supported publication PDFs from its document sources. A source may time out, omit a scan or lack a particular file; one unavailable document does not prevent other successful results. This page does not establish whether a right is in force, an application is pending, or a family publication has the same disclosure.

Office Action citation processing covers US, CN, TW, JP, EP and KR. WO is supported for publication numbers and PDF retrieval, but WO Office Actions cannot be uploaded. Use an official portal below for a separate record check.

Patent number and coverage questions

Which patent number should I enter?
Use the publication number printed on the cited document, with its US, CN, JP, KR, EP, WO or TW prefix and visible kind code. Some supported application-number formats can resolve to a published document; an unpublished application cannot supply a publication PDF.
What do A1, B2, S or letters in Taiwan numbers mean?
They identify a publication kind or local number type. A1 appears on published applications, B2 on some granted US patents and S on the China design example. Taiwan I and D are local identifiers. Preserve the source notation and confirm the matched publication.
Where can I check a patent number at the patent office?
Each country card links to an official portal: USPTO Patent Public Search, CNIPA, J-PlatPat, KIPRIS, Espacenet, PATENTSCOPE or TIPO. These portals help check bibliographic records; this page itself does not run a live office search.
Does every supported patent have a downloadable PDF?
No. DownloadPatent attempts retrieval for supported publication formats, but availability depends on the publication and source. A recognized number is not proof that a complete PDF exists. Unavailable items remain identifiable so you can follow them up.
Can I download a WIPO or WO publication?
Yes, for supported WO publication numbers. If the A1 document is unavailable, the A2 version is also checked. The PDF must still be available from a source. WO Office Actions cannot be uploaded for citation processing.
