This guide is for a document you can identify, such as a US patent number, an EP publication number, a WO publication number, or a Japanese or Taiwanese gazette number. Start with the exact publication identifier printed in the citation. A search result or application record is not proof that a complete original PDF is available.

Start with the publication number

Copy the country or office code, digits, kind code, and publication date into your working notes. A publication number identifies a document that was made public; an application number identifies a filing and may not have a public specification. Do not turn an application number into a guessed publication number by adding A1, B1, or another suffix.

Before saving a file, compare the first page with the citation:

  • country or issuing office;
  • publication or patent number;
  • kind code and document type;
  • title and publication date; and
  • page count and whether the PDF opens completely.

Keep the original cited publication separate from an English family publication, a machine translation, or a rebuilt searchable text PDF. Those can help review, but they are not automatically the same document.

Official ways to download one patent PDF

For a US patent or published US application, use USPTO Patent Public Search. Search the number in Basic Search, open the matching document, then use the PDF, print, or save control. The USPTO PDF quick reference documents direct links for utility, design, plant, and published-application documents, and notes that the direct format has page-count limits. Use Patent Center when you need the public application record or file history; it is not a universal replacement for the publication search screen.

For an EP document, search Espacenet and choose Original document when the record provides it. The EPO European Publication Server is a useful official route for individual EP publication PDFs. For a WO publication, use WIPO PATENTSCOPE and check the document type before downloading. For Japan, use J-PlatPat and for Taiwan use the TIPO patent gazette.

Each office has its own collection, labels, access rules, and missing-document cases. A free search service does not mean that every record has a full PDF or that bulk automation is allowed. Read the office help page when a download control is missing instead of substituting a different family member without recording the change.

When one file becomes a known list

If you already have a list of supported patent references, use DownloadPatent patent downloads to review the parsed numbers and choose the documents together. For a single known number, open the free patent PDF lookup: enter the number and download its PDF without an account. Check current coverage and file formats before relying on a country or document kind. A downloaded package still needs a human check against the source citation.

Frequently asked questions

Is every patent PDF free?

Many public patent-office search and publication services are free to use, but availability, account requirements, rate limits, and document coverage differ. Free access does not guarantee a full original PDF for every bibliographic record.

Can I use an application number?

Use it to locate the case, then confirm the public publication number. An unpublished application or a record without a scanned publication cannot be converted into a PDF by guessing a kind code.

Is an English family document the same as the cited document?

No. Save it as a separate family or translation file and retain the original cited number. A family document can support reading, but it has its own publication identity.

Does DownloadPatent file an IDS?

No. DownloadPatent collects supported patent documents and OA citations. It does not decide disclosure obligations, determine materiality, file an IDS, or download NPL full text. Use the IDS guide and your responsible prosecution team for the filing decision.
