Espacenet is a strong starting point for European and worldwide patent discovery. A result record can contain bibliographic data, family links, or an original document, but those are different things. This guide focuses on retrieving a known document without confusing a front page, a result-list export, a translated view, and the cited publication itself.
Search by the complete publication number
Open Espacenet and search the full publication number when it is available. Include the country or regional prefix and kind code. Review the title, applicant, publication date, and family members before opening the document pane. If the reference came from an Office Action, keep its printed number even when Espacenet suggests a related family member.
Choose Original document
In the document pane, use the three-dot menu and choose Download, then Original document, when that option is present. EPO help explains that this downloads an original document PDF for records where the source is available. The file can be larger than a source-office PDF because the service may assemble page images into a PDF. That difference does not by itself mean the file is wrong; still check the first page and page count.
Do not confuse exports with a full specification
Espacenet can export result information and front pages. A CSV or XLSX list is bibliographic data, and a front-page PDF is not the complete patent specification. If the task needs claims, description, and drawings, open the individual record and look for the original document. A record without that file needs a different official source or a documented unavailable result.
Try the EPO Publication Server for EP documents
For a published European application or granted EP document, check the European Publication Server. EPO describes it as a free service for individual EP document PDFs and PDF/A files. Search the EP publication number and compare the returned title, kind, and date with the citation. The Publication Server is a useful fallback for an EP document; it is not a general substitute for every national family member shown in Espacenet.
Keep the original identity in a mixed list
For US, WO, JP, CN, KR, and TW family members, follow the issuing-office link instead of assuming that the EP record contains the desired national PDF. Use DownloadPatent patent downloads when you already have a supported list, and check coverage before selecting country-specific versions. Review each output against the source number after retrieval.
EPO services are intended for human searching and have fair-use and access conditions. Do not automate repeated page downloads as a substitute for a licensed data service. When a PDF is unavailable, record the source, date, and reason rather than silently replacing it with a family document.

Is a front-page PDF the complete patent document?
No. A front page contains bibliographic information. Use the individual document view and Original document option when you need the full specification.
Why is an Espacenet PDF larger than expected?
EPO explains that some original-document downloads are assembled from page images. The resulting PDF can be larger than the publication-office file. Check the document identity and completeness rather than judging only by file size.
What if Espacenet has the record but no PDF?
Try the EPO Publication Server for an EP document or the issuing national office for another family member. A missing PDF can reflect collection coverage or temporary availability; it is not proof that the patent does not exist.
Can I download many full PDFs from a result export?
No. Result exports and front-page downloads are not the same as a package of full specifications. Use a permitted office data service or DownloadPatent for a known supported list.
