J-PlatPat is INPIT’s free patent-information platform for searching and viewing Japanese and selected foreign patent information. It is useful for a single Japanese gazette, but “download many PDFs” can mean either selecting several documents in a user interface or requesting official bulk data. Those are different workflows.
Find the correct Japanese gazette
Open the Patent/Utility Model search and enter the publication number or another stable identifier. Confirm whether the result is a published application, a registered patent gazette, a utility model, or another document type. Japanese kind codes such as A, B1, and B2 describe publication types; they are not a complete statement of current legal status.
Open the document display and compare the number, title, publication date, applicant, and kind code with the citation. When the record provides a document-unit PDF or PDF download, use that control and keep the original Japanese publication identity in the filename.
Expect document-view and file exceptions
INPIT manuals and FAQs explain that some documents can be missing, imperfect, split into several files, or affected by the display and verification flow. Older documents may require page-by-page handling. If a PDF arrives in parts, retain every part and follow the official merge instructions; do not silently discard pages.
English display text or machine translation is a reading aid. For a cited Japanese publication, the Japanese image or official document is the source to compare. Check the first and last page and keep a note of any unavailable or incomplete file.
What J-PlatPat bulk means
JPO separately describes a patent-information bulk download service for current standard data, J-PlatPat information, and foreign information held by the office. The service uses an application and terms process; JPO says the service itself is free while communication, media, and shipping costs can apply. That institutional bulk route is not the same as clicking PDF for a few search results.
For a known list of supported numbers, use DownloadPatent patent downloads and review each item. Check coverage and file formats before choosing a document version. For foreign documents, see the foreign patent PDF guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is J-PlatPat free?
INPIT describes J-PlatPat as a free search and viewing service, but free search does not guarantee that every record has a complete downloadable PDF. Check the document view and current help pages.
What do A, B1, and B2 mean?
They are Japanese publication kind codes. Use the code to identify the document type, but do not use it alone to infer the current legal status. Confirm the bibliographic and legal-status information in the official record.
Can I download all search results as one PDF?
Not as a general assumption. A few document PDFs, result exports, and JPO bulk data are separate outputs. Use the official bulk service for an institutional data requirement or DownloadPatent for a known supported list.
Does DownloadPatent replace J-PlatPat?
No. J-PlatPat is the official source for checking a Japanese publication. DownloadPatent can help collect supported known numbers and package selected files for review.
DownloadPatent artifact policy
Google machine translations are external links only: open them on Google Patents; they cannot be selected or included in a download. DownloadPatent does not generate or download rebuilt text PDFs or DOCX files. An English family publication is a separate document from the cited original.
