This guide covers manual retrieval of a known, published document from an official patent-office source. Search screens and labels can change; check the linked office instructions if a button has moved. A result record is not proof that its complete original publication PDF is available.

Before you start: use the publication number

Write down the country or office code, publication number, and kind code from the citation. A patent application number and a published-document number are different search keys. If the citation gives only an application number, first confirm that a public publication exists. Keep the citation as printed so you can compare the downloaded title, number, and document kind before filing or archiving it.

United States: Patent Public Search and Patent Center

For a public US patent or published application, open USPTO Patent Public Search and choose Basic search. Enter the patent or publication number, run the search, and open the matching result. In the Document Viewer, select the text/image document view and use the Print or Save control to save the pages as a PDF. The USPTO search page describes the tool as public search for US patents and published applications.

Patent Center can be useful when you need the public application record as well as the publication. Search by application, patent, PCT, or publication number, open the record, and follow the linked patent or publication number into Patent Public Search if the App Data page's Download PDF action does not work. The USPTO's posted workaround is to select the text/image viewer and then Print or Save. Since September 11, 2025, Patent Center requires users to register and verify identity; an anonymous visitor cannot use it. Unpublished applications are not made public by these search routes. See the current Patent Center access guidance.

Europe: Espacenet, with the EPO Publication Server as a fallback

In Espacenet, search the EP publication number and open the matching record. Choose Original document, then use the PDF viewer's Download control when the original document is available. Some records have bibliographic data but no original-document PDF. For an EP publication, try the free EPO European Publication Server: its help page explains number and date search, and the service provides individual PDF/A documents for published EP A and B documents from 1978 onward.

Do not confuse Espacenet's result-list export with a complete-specification download. EPO release notes describe exports of up to 500 results as XLSX/CSV and PDF export of up to 100 front pages from those results; a front page is not the full patent document. Availability of an original document still depends on the record and source. See Espacenet release notes.

WO and PCT publications: WIPO PATENTSCOPE

Open WIPO PATENTSCOPE, search the WO publication number, and open the matching PCT record. In its document area, choose the international publication and download its PDF when offered. WIPO's data-format guide describes PDF availability and notes that the authoritative scanned PDF should be used for legal matters rather than OCR text.

Coverage differs by collection: published PCT applications are included, while national and regional collections are updated on an ad hoc basis. A free WIPO account enables additional result-download features, but the FAQ says downloading the entire database and automated-robot use are prohibited. Use the official interface for a bounded, human-reviewed retrieval, not a scripted mirror. See the PATENTSCOPE FAQ.

Japan: J-PlatPat

Open J-PlatPat, select the Patent/Utility Model number search, enter the Japanese publication number, and open the matching gazette record. Choose the publication image or document-PDF control from the record's document view and save the result. INPIT's current J-PlatPat manuals include a 2026 English manual and a patent/utility-model chapter.

Check the file after download: J-PlatPat's help desk documents that a single publication PDF can be split into multiple files. Its FAQ also says documents published before April 2015 may require downloading pages from the document display one at a time. English display text or machine translation is a reading aid; verify the Japanese publication image when the original is needed. See the J-PlatPat FAQ.

China: CNIPA publication search and analysis systems

CNIPA documents two manual routes. In the Patent Search and Analysis System, create the free account requested by the system, search the publication number, click that number to open the document-view list, then use the folder icon in the toolbar below the full-text image to download the images. Alternatively, use the China Patent Publication Announcement system: run a query, open the result, and choose Download PDF at the upper right. CNIPA's document-download answer gives both click paths. The publication-announcement interface is Chinese-language; for an application record rather than its published gazette, use the appropriate CNIPA service and access rules.

Korea: KIPRIS

Open KIPRIS, choose the Patent/Utility Model search, and search the publication number. Open the matching detail record, then choose the publication full text or the registered-publication full text and its PDF/document control. Use the original Korean gazette as the source file.

KIPRIS separately offers machine translation from Korean to English for some patent full texts. Its FAQ says that not every record has the translation, CAPTCHA may be required on some Korean documents, and machine translation can contain errors or omissions. Treat it as a reading aid, not as a substitute for the original publication. The help page's Online Download function exports result data to spreadsheet or text formats; that is different from a bundle of full-document PDFs. See KIPRIS patent search help and the KIPRIS FAQ.

When you need more than a few separate files

The office portals are useful when you need to inspect one record and choose its exact publication. For a known list across offices, compare the source coverage and exception handling before repeating those steps by hand. DownloadPatent patent downloads accepts supported references for batch retrieval; check current country and document coverage first. Its batch-download guide explains list review and selection. Batch output still needs a check against the citation and the intended publication kind.

Frequently asked questions

Are these official sources free?

The public search and publication services linked above are official office or WIPO services. Individual features can require registration, a verified account, or a particular access route. JPO and KIPRIS also have separate bulk-data programs with their own terms; those are not required for an ordinary single-document search.

Why can I find a record but not a PDF?

The database may expose bibliographic details without a scanned publication file; the citation may identify an unpublished application; or the source may have a temporary viewer or download problem. Try the office's alternate official route, check that the kind code is right, and record the result rather than substituting a family member without review.

Does an English translation replace the original patent PDF?

No. Office machine translation can help locate or read a document, but it is not the original publication. Keep the exact cited publication identifiable and label any translated or family document separately.

Can I download every jurisdiction's PDFs from one office portal?

No single office portal is a complete source for all six jurisdictions. Availability and document kind vary by collection. For a mixed list, compare the original result for each item and use the DownloadPatent coverage page to see which references its batch workflow currently supports.
